File this under: Darwin was robbed.
A teenager was rushed to hospital after overdosing on espresso coffee.
The 17-year-old downed seven double espresso coffees while working in the family's sandwich shop and was left "burning up and hyperventilating".
Student Jasmine Willis, who thought the coffees were single measures, said the effects of the espresso were so severe her actions left customers bewildered.
She said she started laughing and crying for no reason while serving them, but after being sent home by her father Gary the medical symptoms started. She developed a fever at home and was unable to breathe properly.
Jasmine, of Stanley, County Durham, was rushed to the University Hospital of North Durham after her cousin called the paramedics. Doctors confirmed she had overdosed on caffeine and after monitoring her condition allowed her home a few hours later.
She made a full recovery and wants to warn others about the dangers of excessive coffee drinking.
"My nerves were all over the place," Jasmine said.
"I was crying in front of the customers and had tears streaming down my face."
After going home she experienced frightening physical symptoms. She added: "I was drenched. I was burning up and hyperventilating.
"I was having palpitations, my heart was beating so fast and I think I was going into shock."
After being allowed home from hospital she suffered side effects for days and now cannot face the sight of coffee.
She said: "I felt exhausted for days afterwards. I did not realise this could happen to you and I only hope other people learn from my mistake."
Her father Gary, who runs The Sandwich Bar, in Stanley, said: "She did not realise she was drinking double measures.
"I have always stressed to my children the importance of moderation but Jasmine got caught out on this occasion."Labels: drugs, food, health news

I know all about this kind of thing. She stressed her adrenal glands from drinking all that caffeine. Which in turn gave her a huge adrenaline rush. I've been through similar many times but not from caffeine.
Ha ha, only 14 shots? Well I can say from experience that caffeine poisoning can mess with you, but it's not likely to kill you. And you'll get the effects of poisoning LONG before you should be able to drink enough to kill you. It's a stimulant for sure, and any large amount of stimulants, especially one that gives a "rush" like caffeine will have an effect on you.
I myself get the effects of poisoning way to much for my own good, but basically it's helped me get through work and such. And has help in fixing my anxiety sleep pattern insomnia [seriously it's either one day of straight caffine to stay awake so I can sleep, or a few weeks of medicine to sleep at night]. But regardless of how it works out, I myself can handle 4 times of what the average person would get poisoning from. And my heart-rate varies up to 10 bpm when I'm on an off caffeine, so I can say that the stuff isn't that great for you, but you'd really need to have a lot of other stuff wrong with you [i.e. high blood pressure, heart problems, lung problems, or psychologically oversensitive reactivity]
Now for the part of caffeine poisoning she didn't tell about. Your REALLY edgy, you'll basically constantly need to be doing something at all times, or have a strange feeling of paranoia or some such thing, I've never heard about a "good" feeling. It's slightly similar to O.C.D. for me, because I'll always spazz if I'm not working. Second is the pain, the day after you'll have soreness in your respiratory and heart area (because excessive stimulation causes problems) and Lastly, my least favorite, you may hear voices. At first I though this was just me, but I've confirmed it with a few people, you may hear voices. (which is why I ALWAYS listen to music when i'm having symptoms)
Now the above is for caffeine poisoning, not just regular intake, and the chances of actually dieing from coffee are very low, even an expresso. http://www.energyfiend.com/death-by-caffeine/ is a good site for setting your paranoia at ease. But yeah, it's terrible to hear that another coffee lover was scared off by that. (really though 14 shots over what period of time >.<)

Roflcopter, it's likely that it was only over a few hour period considering she was at work. I'd assume she doesn't work full time, so less than 8 hours, AND she went home ill before the end of her shift.
O_o ... assuming she wasn't over 145 pounds, she was well past the poisoning threshold. Still not in the theoretical kill-zone, but still that really is serious. Even 7 shots, assuming she did get it right, would be bad unless she had serious tolerance to the stuff.
>.< Ok, I take back what I said about it not being that dangerous, people shouldn't drink shots like that. It's freaking insane. I'm actually amazed that she didn't have more problems than that. At least she'll learn to use variations of caffeine so you don't have to overdoes on one to get the same effect of another. *sigh* It makes me concerned about getting a quad-shot before all-nighters. ~Roflcopter~
I think the main point is to be reminded that caffeine IS a drug. We don't really think about it much, but it's true.
And take it from someone who's experimented with a few different drugs -- yeah they ARE cries for help, who would have thunk -- all of them have risks if abused.
