What's the #1 reason why you go (or would go) to a Convention?
Show me the dealers room!
There are guests I must worship!
Gaming. Roleplay, tabletop, DDR whatever.
Watch AMVs or videos of some kind.
OMG, this panel is specifically for ME!
I am an artist. It is my destiny.
Dances. PLUR PLUR PLUR PLUR
I'm assured I will get laid.
My friends are all going. We're sharing a room!
I would never go to a Convention. I hate you all.

10 Reasons to Delete Your MySpace Account

In association of International Delete Your MySpace Account day, here is a nice blog really spelling out the reasons why you should do it. I checked off the list and it wasn't hard to finally realize, oh boy did I ever want to do this a long time ago.

Maybe you do too.

Happy International Delete Your MySpace Account Day!!

MySpace users fed up with glitchy pages, annoying banner ads and an abundance of spam may finally have the motivation to take the plunge and delete their accounts.

Wednesday is International Delete Your MySpace Account Day, an online protest geared at uniting users eager to ditch the popular social networking site.

Tired of juggling both a Facebook and MySpace account, blogger Simon Owens instigated the movement Jan. 20, laying out 10 reasons to ditch the News Corp.-owned site.

"After months of only visiting my myspace (sic) profile in order to delete spam friend requests from half-nude women, I’ve reached the end of the line," wrote Owens in his original declaration.

Rather than delete his profile immediately, Owens decided to recruit as many participants as possible for his self-declared coup.

"I’d love to see a large number of people delete their accounts all at once in order to send MySpace a message: Your website sucks," he continued.

Owens' supporters have posted their votes of solidarity in the comments section of his blog.

One user, Rachael, elected to delete her account before the designated day, writing: "I jumped the gun and I already deleted mine.... SUCK IT, MYSPACE!"

Another user, Cope, offered simple thanks for the movement: "Great idea. Thanks for pushing me to get the monkey off my back."

Other fans of the silent protest eagerly hopped on the bandwagon, creating a Facebook group to spread the word. Nearly 1,800 group members have confirmed attendance, indicating their participation in deleting their MySpace accounts.

One Facebook user, Tom, based in London, posted a message indicating his support to the group board: "Mine's gone. Solong MySpace, you were shit."

Another user, Smelly Jen, posted her support of the movement, writing: "I did it! So refreshing! Like ripping off a band aid! It's gone forever!"

The online protest hasn't gone unnoticed by MySpace officials.

According to an article on News.com.au, Rebekah Horne, vice president of Fox Interactive Media and MySpace in Australia and New Zealand, bit back at the international event, saying: "This Delete-Your-MySpace day is just about being controversial. MySpace is still the biggest social networking site in the world."

(Ed note: I have deleted my MySpace account today. I never really wanted it to begin with, so I was a prime target for just such a campaign.)

Still no word on fixing how fugly the site is.

MySpace.com has agreed to turn over to the nation's attorneys general the names and other information about sex offenders who have used the popular social networking Web site.

Georgia Attorney General Thurbert Baker says he will share the information with law enforcement authorities so they can crack down on Internet predators who search MySpace for victims. The information could help authorities find probation or parole violations among offenders who are barred from using a computer or contacting minors, Baker said.

"Today's decision by MySpace clears the way for law enforcement, both here in Georgia and around the nation, to target Internet predators who use the appeal of social networking sites to search for potential victims," said Baker, president of the National Association of Attorneys General.

Baker and his counterparts from seven other states demanded the information in a letter sent last week to MySpace, which is owned News Corp. MySpace originally refused to give up data, citing federal privacy laws.

MySpace, however, issued a news release today, pledging to release information about the sex offenders it has identified through a program called "Sentinel SAFE." The program uses information from state sex offender registries to find offenders.

A MySpace spokeswoman said the site is deleting the profiles of 7,000 sex offenders who have been identified on MySpace. The site lets people create and share profiles online, including journals, photos and other personal information. MySpace says it has 66 million users a month.

"In addition to immediately removing registered sex offenders from MySpace," Mike Angus, MySpace's executive vice president and general counsel, said in a prepared statement, "our plans have always been to provide the information collected by Sentinel SAFE to law enforcement, including the attorneys general."

Wiki founder suggests MySpace is FAIL.

Cape Town - Popular social-networking site MySpace will fail in a few years time, says self-confessed geek Jimmy Wales.

Wales, founder of the free web encyclopaedia Wikipedia, is currently in South Africa for a digital freedom tour.

MySpace, owned by News Corp and with reportedly more than 100 million registered users, "hurts my eyes", Wales says.

"There's way too much advertising and they're not really respecting their own community."

Wikipedia is another matter, he says. "We're not similar at all - you get involved in a community."

Wales, who confesses to spending lots of time on the web - "I pretty much roll out of bed and log on" - says when he started Wikipedia he knew it was a big idea, but he never imagined it would be in the Top 10 websites.

Wikipedia is reportedly the ninth most popular website in the world.

"I was thinking more in the Top 100."

Wikipedia has been hailed as a revolutionary tool, but it has also raised concerns about errors and accuracy. Wales says there will be some new software features to limit errors, but stresses that where others would respond to errors by locking down, his response is to be even more open.

And how does his family react to his internet celebrity status? "It's fun for them" and normal for his six-year-old daughter, who was born two weeks before the launch of Wikipedia.

Asked if he would be willing to sell to the big guns like Google and Yahoo, he said no, and that he is working on "the next big thing that will hit the internet" instead.

His free, completely open source transparent search engine, will have a "huge degree of human community oversight".

Users can expect to see it towards the end of the year.

And his advice to aspiring online entrepreneurs? "Find something you love and go for it."

"It's good to have a geek hobby that turns into a career."
