Quick news and notes.
* Today is the last day you can vote in the current Pretty Boy Poll
* Related perhaps, please keep the *chan conversations off the tagboard. I don't want to gain notoriety with those folks. It would only end poorly for my sites, I'm sure.
* Boku No Sexual Harassment OAV 3 is now available over on shotalicious.org
* Any donations you'd like to make to help me get to DragonCon and/or Anime Weekend Atlanta this year would be much appreciated. Buying a book gets you a book and me 4 bucks so maybe it's time to finally get your copy?
* Stupid sexy Randy Orton got into a motorcycle accident just after he was cleared medically to return to the WWE and now is out -another- 3-6 months. Damn you Orton!
* I really thought the Opening Ceremony for Beijing's Olympics were the most beautiful thing ever televised.
* In Soviet Russia, Georgia will become part of you. (By force if necessary, apparently.)
* Happy (belated) Birthday Elf.
* Over on the secret Pico x Chico x Coco Hype site, the AMV for Boku No Pico has been fixed to where it now includes sound. Yeah, it kinda helps to have sound in an anime MUSIC video.
Oh shit! Over on the shotalicious.org video page you have the oppertunity to download the first half of the landmark uncensored yaoi video. But please don't direct link it anywhere, and if you already have it, don't be downloading it again! We need all the bandwidth we can have. Especially since I've heard that Pico's code is related to the upcoming Pico x Chico X Coco video release in October?
What's that? You've not taken a look at his love letter up above?
Here are the hints so far:
*It's a code. *One that uses letters to replace other letters. *It starts with VVV which means it probably is a web address and V=W. *If it's a web address it should end in .html shouldn't it? *And if it's a web address the 8 letters per line shouldn't matter. *And unless PIXIE bought a new domain, it should be either on pixiesticks or shotalicious site right?
2. It's really fucking hot today. Like makes me feel ill hot.
3. Work manages to suck more every day. How is this possible?
4. Thanks for the comments on my hair. I'm actually growing to like it somewhat. I think a rebleach/redye is still in its future. Perhaps Elf can save it. He used to have blue hair you know.
5. You're running out of time to download Papa to Kiss in the Dark OAV 2 over on shotalicious.org. The next featured video isn't exactly rare, but is a yaoi classic involving corn.
Last night was the beginning of a long weekend for your faithful webmaster.
Friday night I spent at Heretic as per usual. The beats were okay, but I wasn't so much in the mood for dancing. I've been in the mood for sex. But I didn't quite manage that either. I did sell the remaining 2 copies of "Later, Skater" bringing my total sold to 16 in person and 7 online: 23 copies so far in all. That's a great start but I want more! Go check it out and see if a copy wouldn't fit nicely on your bookshelf.
Shinji was also there. We seem to have a odd connection now where I don't like him and hate how he's mean to me and yet I still make out with him. Very strange. I wished we'd fuck. It'd probably be way hot.
Started Saturday off with a terrible hangover, but ironically it didn't last long. That's very good since this afternoon I have the Asian Express Pool Party with DJ Kaze. Following that is DJ Eddie Baez at Heretic. Last time he was there 900 people packed the house.
Not to be outdone with fun and sexiness, Sunday I'm going to visit Fang and Pirrip. They are the delicious artists you can see linked on the left hand side. Long time friends they are some of the most delicious boys I know. I'm looking forward to getting a closer look at some of their work, Korean BBQ, and breaking all of Fang's rules of his new decked out room. (I'm kidding, dude. I'll make sure to only use the bed for sleeping and sex.)
Thankfully I requested Monday off so I can recover what I hope to be a real memorable weekend. It'll be made even more so if I can manage to get a little boyxboy goin' on. I swear.
Gesshoku Designs has alot of new and unique yaoi themed merch. Still no one dares to make shota promo stuff huh? Tsk. Tsk. But anyway, what they do got is pretty slick so I'm adding them to the list of perma-links on the left hand side of the page. Check it out.
One of the easiest uke to recognize by sight. Your flamboyantly gay behavior makes it easy for seme to prey upon you, and that is exactly what you want, and you usually have a few tricks up your sleeve as well. You most often have colored hair, designer clothes, and eyes that are constantly roaming, searching for the perfect partner. You are best paired with the Chibi Seme, who will rise to your challenge with their mischievous nature.
Most compatible with: Chibi Seme
Least compatible with: Sadistic Seme, Opportunist Seme
What seme or uke are you? Take the experience at SemeUke.com, or find merchandise here.
The Yaoi Jamboree Con page has been updated with more guest information. If anyone was wanting to know of another yaoi convention besides Yaoi Con this one will be marking its debut year this June in Arizona. Details can be found here.
People absolutely need to stop sending me emails about the yaoi archives. People need to stop freaking out about things concerning shotalicious.org.
Oh boo-fucking-hoo it's changed to its own domain and has a bigger focus on shota. Yaoi is so damn mainstream now, it's not like you can't find it everywhere on the internet. Professional porn sites now have subscriptions that include yaoi, that's how mainstream yaoi is.
Yes, of course there is still yaoi on the new site. You know, the new one that you can get to if you go to the EXACT SAME LOCATION where you used to go. But people are so much more interested in freaking the fuck out that things are kind of different.
Well, let me make it perfectly clear. I like that I have fans. I like making this site. I've been doing this for 7 years and while I've wanted to stop now and then, I'll likely be doing it for at least 7 more.
But this is my website. Mine. Not yours. So quit your whining and complaining about things that haven't even really changed.
THE ONLY THING THAT HAS CHANGED IS THE YAOI/SHOTA IS HOSTED ON ITS OWN DOMAIN, WITH ITS OWN HOSTING. AND THE OLD ARCHIVES WHICH WERE ALREADY LOST BACK IN DECEMBER ARE GONE AND ARE SLOWLY BEING REPOSTED.
This post is now going to be the OFFICIAL AUTOREPLY™ to any emailed or posted complaints that are covered in the ranting above.
I mean seriously, if you're really as big of a fan of this site as you say before you start going off about how much you hate what I'm doing, then don't you think you would have been keeping track of what's happened?
Today marks the first day of spring and last night at The Heretic's "Boys Night Out" party, there were lots of pretty lean things who were wearing very little but smiles. I cozied with them in the dark room, but sadly they weren't interested in much more than a bit of a caress, a bit of peeping around, and a whole lot of cockteasing.
Still, it was glorious fun and I'm glad to have enjoyed their coming out as the seasons shift from winter to spring.
Speaking of sprung, all this weekend I'll be posting stuff up on the little brother site, shotalicious.org. While it had a bit of a rough time getting started with some less than rosy responses from some (former?) fans, I think I've won the battle if not the war for the hearts and minds -- or should I say, groins and minds -- of those who are willing to give it a chance.
Essentially, I keep saying the only thing that's changed is the domain name. And maybe a more enthusiastic displaying of the shota. Not going to be apologetic about it any longer, my friends. And I do appreciate the compliments, the sending of pics, and even another monetary donation that one anonymous person gave. Thanks very much!
Already I posted one of the AMVs I did. I'm still not in possession of some better video editing software. I don't see my friend Colin until next Saturday when we film another episode of the KIDS Fundcast, so no new AMVs yet. But they're coming.
I don't really have any other plans this Easter weekend. Maybe I can kidnap Elf, tie him up with duct tape, put bunny ears on him, and take some disturbing photos. I dunno. Have a great weekend and Happy Easter.
You know, I'm fairly certain that the Yaoi BL PC market is doing much more amazing things than this DS back massage mini-game. But hey, watch and enjoy anyway right?
Despite feeling sickness coming on, I still made it out to Momocon for a few hours at Ga Tech today. Seeing bishie artists Fang and Nemo was top priority and man have they been hard (heh) at work drawing up lots of good stuff lately. I spent some cash on picking up some of their prints. Pure hotness. They obviously draw from their hands-on experience.
I also saw Elf today. He showed me what he had been working on so far for the cover to "Later, Skater." That book should be ready to go coming here in the next month, I suspect. He's got a nice splatter, abstract, yet delicious sketchy thing going on so far. I hope he could use my imput to bring something closer to finished.
All in all, it's been a pretty mixed up weekend to say the least. Hopefully, I can get back to the good side of feeling well, make some much needed cash, and have a great week this week. And I wish the same for you as well, my friends.
On this, pixiesticks.org's 7 Year Anniversary, I want to thank all of you who have started coming out of the woodwork. All the emails. All the answers to the polls. To the comments on the tag-board, or on posts. All the donations, either of content or money.
This site is now, seven years after it started as something so very small, so successful I have decided to split it in two parts. And what's even better, you won't necessarily have to change anything about the way you view or have come to appreciate this site.
A few weeks ago, I purchased shotalicious.org and started building the framework. It has slightly better hosting than pixiesticks.org and I want it to be where all the shit goes down when it comes to the yaoi and shota content. It will be run as a separate site, but truly it's going to be tightly held together with this one.
It will feature increased amounts of shota vs yaoi. Seven years ago when yaoi was first really starting to make an impact, it was where the action was at. Now, shota is in that same position. I want shota panels at anime conventions. Hell, I want a shota convention in the United States! It's the only way we can ensure that the government doesn't start taking away what we love piece by piece my friends.
The new site will feature an image blog much like the one that used to be over on the yaoi page here. But in addition, there will be the glorious return of video clips. Hopefully the bandwidth will work out. But that is part of the beauty of this. If shotalicious does ever go down, pixiesticks will not. There is also a message board over on the new site which I think is in alot of ways better than the tag-board that will remain here.
As for pixiesticks? Well, it will continue to move forward too. The blog will keep containing news postings I think are interesting as well as personal stuff about myself. The works page, which took a hit when the site went down in December, will be renewed with vigor. Especially as I get done editing "Later, Skater" and it draws nearer to publishing. And, of course, the movie review page will be there too.
I know many people will be thinking, why are you totally screwing with things again so soon after you lost your webhosting back in December? But you have to look at it from my perspective: I want to be able to be as good as I was the day before that happened. And then, I also want to be better. I decided the only way that could happen was to separate the "in danger of getting deleted content" from the rest so I don't get totally heartbroken when the inevitable happens.
For seven years I've staked my claim on the Internet at pixiesticks.org. Now, I'm doing it also at shotalicious.org. And trust me when I say, over there, I'm severely going to be marking my territory.
Lots of things going on at pixiesticks.org right now, and I wanna give you the latest in the Pico Love Letter plot as well as tell you some of what is planned for March. So listen up!
Today I just posted some yaoi over on the yaoi page. 26 images. Some are shota, granted. And some were sent in by Penny. They're the really unusual horror based ones. They're disturbing AND delightful!
Tomorrow I'm going to take down the secret stash and I won't be having one in March. While I know that's kind of a bummer, trust me, I'll be needing the bandwidth for other things.
Besides, you all will be busy trying to figure out what is revealed through Pico's game which he sent me today. Apparently that's what his love letters were trying to tell us. Now that I got a yaoi post up, I'll work on coding the game and putting it up on the site. I expect that to be done later today (Friday) or early tomorrow (Saturday.) It looks like it'll be lots of fun. Especially for those who do like trying to figure out the secret stash passwords.
As for March 11th. Well, as you know, that will mark the 7th Anniversary of pixiesticks.org. Not a very easy feat on the internet to reach that mark. Especially for a personal website! I was hoping we'd have a big party, all get together, and have a shota pop out of a cake or something. But I'm fairly sure that's illegal in like most countries.
So the idea of a Pixie-Con is going to have to be out this year.
What I DO have in store for you I think though will be just as cool, so I hope that you stick with the "plot," keep looking for clues, and have fun with it.
Well, guess I better get back to working on all of these things. Remember if you want to donate any yaoi/shota you can email me at pixiesticks@gmail.com. And if you wanna donate any cash, there is a great link for that to your left. You can email me too with any questions or whatever. Take care!
The yaoi archives are broken and I'm not sure if they ever worked properly. The problem is that pixiesticks.org still uses Blogger in an old fashioned way. I have haxxored it to keep my classic templates and along with other things, it's starting to spring some leaks every now and then.
What I have done to patch the problem is set up the yaoi archives to collect the posts monthly, to only show so many posts on the main page, and to have the drop down menu you see up there to the upper left.
Here's the part that it doesn't fix... Each of the pages you end up going to, say January 2008 for example, will also have the drop down box. But I can't get those to work right.
Why? Because I can't seem to get the templates for the yaoi archives to work properly due to what I said above about using Blogger in the old fashioned way.
So there you have it. It's not fixed, but workable until I stop being so frustrated with the shitty ass Blogger coding.
Pretty Boy Results are up and unlike the real election, there are no super delegates to bribe. Here we go!
What do you think of February's secret stash?
3% ask What's a secret stash? Those were probably mostly first timers to the site. Welcome. Or as they say in your home planet... Welcome.
8% responded that they were shocked and horrified. This is the one I picked. I mean really. Guro and yaoi... together? Maki no more drugs for you!
19% shrugged their shoulders and mumbled meh. I wonder what passes for real entertainment in your fast paced world, know everything world?
22% picked I don't know the password because I'm stupid. What rhymes with stupid anyway? Ignoring just about everything from the mention of Valentine's Day to things with hearts. Apparently 22% of pixiesticks.org users can't seem to figure out that cupid rhymes with stupid. I'm not worried the site will crash due to 22% of people suddenly downloading the stash all at once. After all, they couldn't figure out cupid rhymes with stupid. Maybe they can't read at all?
47% said that the stash offering was relevant to your interests. You sick sick siiiiiick sons of bitches. I really hope Hillary or Obama get elected. You're gonna need some of their government supported health care you disgusting motherfuckers. ;)
A month filled with hearts, roses, chocolates, and ABSOLUTE MISERY!! Well, at least to those of us who are on the sidelines watching the rest of you love birds enjoying yourself. Hey! It's not for lack of trying. Though sometimes they say you can try too hard, right?
In any event, a new month brings us a new banner, new NAVI buttons, and a new secret stash over on the yaoi page. I also decided to upload some regularly accessable yaoi just for fun since I've been sick this week. It's all my friend Colin's fault. He got me sick last Saturday when we were filming that Mini Hannah Montana thing.
Oh, but I'm sure you're much more interested in your clues for this month's stash right?
Well first let me go ahead and tell you that THIS STASH ISN'T FOR EVERYONE! It features graphic bloody gore and violence along with the usual hot man on man buttstuff that we love so much.
Alright, now that that disclaimer is out of the way. Also remember the usuals... don't post any hints, or the stash password. Remember it's all lowercase and you have to actually press the submit button.
1. It's a five letter, english, proper name (but keep it lowercase). 2. It rhymes with what you are if you can't get this month's stash. 3. "Shot through the heart, and you're to blame!" 4. As always has to do with this month's theme. 5. Is shota.
As usual, if I see that after a few days people aren't getting it, I'll post some more clues on the comments section. But really people, the more you over think this, the more confused you're going to get. Good luck, and may you find love this month.
Quickly all the news that's fit to type in like a few minutes.
* John McCain won the Florida primary in a tight battle against Romney. * Rudy 9/11 Gulliani 9/11 is expected 9/11 to quit 9/11 tomorrow. * Hillary won in Florida for the Dems, but wins no delegates.
* Meet the Spartians STILL hurts days after I saw it. * There are rumors of Hannah Montana naughty pics on her MySpace. Oh lawd. * If you ever wanted to see me in a compromising situation...
* You are running out of time for January's Secret Stash. * Next month's stash is all about love due to the Valentine's Day holiday. * Yaoi posts may resume tomorrow if I'm feeling like it.
Oh lawd, is that another secret stash on pixiesticks.org? Why yes, yes it is.
I felt like I really ought to offer up the 3rd and final section of the first half of Sensitive Pornograph. I really hope you guys saved your first two sections. (Don't email, don't comment, don't BAWWW! about them. I'm not posting them again right now or anytime soon.)
I think that I can offer secret stashes again, I just can't simply host all these videos in a more lengthy state of time like I was doing before. So, this is what we got to work with and we'll enjoy it if we can.
Here are your January Secret Stash hints! 1) You must enter the password on the yaoi page and PRESS SUBMIT. 2) It is two words, but make it one word. (Example: If the password is "golf club" you would type in "golfclub" 3) It's the name of an animal. 4) Related to this month's theme. 5) How does they know what apples is?
If I see that after a while, not that many people are getting the hang of things, I'll post some more hints in the comments section of this post. Please do not post your own hints or the password. Please do not post the link to the secret stash page elsewhere. Please do not feed the bears.
New Years Eve is one of the only nights of the year where the non-professional party people try to have a good time. I'm all for sharing the love (and the dance floor) with them, but some of you bitches need to know when to say when about three cocktails before you fall into me. And I'm talking about actual girls. Seriously! You're coming into our gay nightclubs, all fine and well, but don't make complete asses of yourself. You're pissing me off!
On a more positive note: Kaze and Tatsuo's hospitality was so wonderful. I felt very loved while spending our third New Years Eve together as friends. I ventured to their home, which is very lovely. We watched part of the Japan 4 hour annual New Years Eve concert. Tat gave me more Japanese candy! Yum yum yum.
WETbar is where pretty much all of the girls taking spills with their drinks in hand took place. But it was also where we rung in the actual New Year. Who would have thought this time last year Britney Spears would have had made such a disgraceful fall only to be reclaimed as a diva the pretty boys all love singing and dancing to?
I didn't win any of the cash money drop, but then again, I wasn't really trying. And I wasn't dancing so much either. This was because there really wasn't much space to do anything other than perhaps survey the carnage.
A jaunt over to The Body Shop afterwards was filled with ALOT more fun than usual. While I've discussed at length how the after-hours club has simply not lived up to any expectations, last night they really put on a barn burner. Sure, it was mostly filled with the sketchiest of the bunch (partly because another after-hours party at Center Stage was shut down by the po-po), but it was the most fun I'd had there in a while. And perhaps for the first time, The Body Shop felt like a real club.
Today I've spent mostly resting. It was a really long final day of 2007, but I'm glad to say that I survived a particularly troublesome year.
I've also been slowly chipping away at editing down my winning entry for NaNoWriMo written back in November. It's a novel called "Later, Skater" and I'm really fond of it. Editing isn't a easy chore to say the least, but I really feel good about this project and hope it will be successful.
Glad to have each and every one of you to start off this new year. 2008 could end up being one of the most dramatic in the world we live in, but one thing will remain constant: Pixiesticks.org will still stand tall as one of the best places for yaoi and shota.
I'm pleased to report that the old blog and all of its archives are back. All of the posts created their own post pages correctly. All of the archive links look to be working correctly. And I can post new posts going forward correctly.
Basically I just reclaimed the site's history which is very outstanding and surprising to me that it was able to be accomplished.
Now, the bad news is, at this moment, any picture that used to be posted on this blog is currently gone. I intend on fixing this, but this could take a long time since I have to upload all of them.
I still do not intend on returning the yaoi archives. It just is too large of an undertaking to bring all of that back the way it was. And I definitely do not intend on hosting videos since the bandwidth problems associated with them are what caused all of this to begin with. I know this is really making some of you upset or mad and angry. I'm sorry. But in the end, as always, it's my site and I'm going to run it like I want.
So bottom line, things are looking up. Still got a lot of work ahead of me to get this side of the site completely back. And the yaoi will continue to move forward on its own schedule but never backwards with reposting of archives.
I have been working hard all day trying to iron out programming bugs that have crept up while working on bringing the site back to life.
Basically the design for the site technically shouldn't exist. Blogger wants us all to update to ugly templates that feature all this new coding and custom stuff. But I don't want it and I know you don't want it. Pixiesticks.org that looks like MySpace? Fuck that!
So I've been trying to clean up the old template and make it work and that's created problems. For the site to proceed forward, I need things to work automatically like archiving and individual posts to have their own pages. And I want you to have things like individual post commenting still. And permalinks. An email link on every post. Hell, even date and time of when I posted something requires coding. And I was having a really hard time today getting all of that to work using this, I admit, outdated template.
But I'm pleased to say that I think I have everything working now. Each blog post is creating its own individual html page that also will list comments when they are made. Each weeks worth of posts should be collecting to their own weekly html page for archiving purposes. And even though the yaoi page is still empty, it looks like it will work like the blog page does (although without comments, individual post pages, and will be archived monthly.)
What this all means is that now that I think that the site has these bugs fixed, I can really start bringing pixiesticks.org back to life.
I need to reiterate there will NOT be an attempt to bring back the old yaoi archives, the Now Playing video section, or the secret stash. Though in time I will be attempting to bring the old blog archives back up somehow.
What will I be posting in the future? You're just going to have to come back and find out. I can tell you that we're going to start tomorrow with something we used to call... Yaoi Boi Sunday. See you then, and thanks again so much for your patience and support.
On Thursday, December 13th, my webhost, Powweb, suspended their hosting of the site. They said that the site pulled too much bandwidth and because they were alerted to the site, they checked it out and decided the content violated their Terms of Service.
I cannot access the records to find out if there was a sudden surge in bandwidth use, but historically the site has never even come close to reaching the monthly amount.
As for the Terms of Service violations, it's pretty much assumed that the site as long as it wasn't causing any bandwidth problems, the yaoi content of the site wasn't really a concern.
In any event, I obtained new webhosting, GoDaddy, and will be canceling my service with Powweb as soon as I can get them to communicate with me. Which, by the way, is proving to be pretty difficult.
Over the last two days I've been putting together the basic mainframe of the site. The five pieces that are familiar to anyone who's been to pixiesticks.org are about, blog, yaoi, works, reviews. There are now working skeletons of each of these parts, as is the link to the Amazon Honor System which is where you can make money donations.
There is absolutely no way I can return all of the archives of the past several years back online like a flip of a switch. It is impractical. It is messy. And it just won't work.
So, going forward, there will be a new blog and new yaoi section.
In the blog, it'll be business as usual in the posting of all sorts of news stories, private personal details, and just randomness. In the future, I will attempt to bring back the old blog archives so they aren't completely lost to time. This is as much for me as it is for anyone else. I just need to figure out how to do it without breaking anything.
In the yaoi, it'll also be business as usual in the posting of yaoi and shota pictures I find or people draw and send to me. There will NOT be an attempt to bring back the old yaoi archives, the Now Playing video section, or the secret stash. We will be building new archives going forward. I can't just upload all that stuff back up on the site right away and expect it to work. I am sorry if this causes anyone to be upset.
As for the other sections there have been minimal changes.
The about page finally makes logistical sense in being named about.html. It also has a new description and webmaster photo. In the future, the webmaster photo gallery and other personal information about me will be added.
The works page will be more logistically organized when it returns fully in the future. Currently, it has a slightly altered look with the addition of the most recent completed manuscript called "Later, Skater." In addition, all of the smaller short stories and poetry has been returned to the site.
The reviews page has been uploaded with no changes necessary since it was a glorified text file.
I know that change is hard for people. I know that a lot of you are new to the site, and that most of you only came for the yaoi. I know that some of you have followed pixiesticks.org for years. Some since the beginning. I want you to all continue to come back to my site, but understand if what's happened makes you want to delete your bookmark and move on.
I've only lost my webhosting once before when it comes to pixiesticks.org. It happened two years after the creation of the site, back in 2003. It's been twice that long now and it hurts more than twice as much.
But I think it happened for a reason. That there are lessons I need to learn from this. And that I need to take this chance to somewhat start again fresh. The site may not run smoothly for a while. Things are probably still going to break because I'm not a very good webmaster when it comes to programming html. And blogger is probably going to continue to give me a hard time.
However, I hope that all of this can turn out for the best.
So, how are you doing on this month's Secret Stash? Have you found any of the SEVEN links I hid? Did you find the one that lead to the first part of Sensitive Pornograph's first episode?
Well, go back and check them again because now one of the remaining SIX are active with the next Secret Stash location. There you'll find the second part of the SINFUL Sensitive Pornograph's first episode.
Don't know what I'm talking about? Maybe you need a refresher course.
US House rushes vote that could create problems for yaoi/hentai fans.
The U.S. House of Representatives on Wednesday overwhelmingly approved a bill saying that anyone offering an open Wi-Fi connection to the public must report illegal images including "obscene" cartoons and drawings--or face fines of up to $300,000.
That broad definition would cover individuals, coffee shops, libraries, hotels, and even some government agencies that provide Wi-Fi. It also sweeps in social-networking sites, domain name registrars, Internet service providers, and e-mail service providers such as Hotmail and Gmail, and it may require that the complete contents of the user's account be retained for subsequent police inspection.
Before the House vote, which was a lopsided 409 to 2, Rep. Nick Lampson (D-Texas) held a press conference on Capitol Hill with John Walsh, the host of America's Most Wanted and Ernie Allen, head of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
Allen said the legislation--called the Securing Adolescents From Exploitation-Online Act, or SAFE Act--will "ensure better reporting, investigation, and prosecution of those who use the Internet to distribute images of illegal child pornography."
The SAFE Act represents the latest in Congress' efforts--some of which have raised free speech and privacy concerns--to crack down on sex offenders and Internet predators. One bill introduced a year ago was even broader and would have forced Web sites and blogs to report illegal images. Another would require sex offenders to supply e-mail addresses and instant messaging user names.
Wednesday's vote caught Internet companies by surprise: the Democratic leadership rushed the SAFE Act to the floor under a procedure that's supposed to be reserved for noncontroversial legislation. It was introduced October 10, but has never received even one hearing or committee vote. In addition, the legislation approved this week has changed substantially since the earlier version and was not available for public review.
Not one Democrat opposed the SAFE Act. Two Republicans did: Rep. Ron Paul, the libertarian-leaning presidential candidate from Texas, and Rep. Paul Broun from Georgia.
This is what the SAFE Act requires: Anyone providing an "electronic communication service" or "remote computing service" to the public who learns about the transmission or storage of information about certain illegal activities or an illegal image must (a) register their name, mailing address, phone number, and fax number with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children's "CyberTipline" and (b) "make a report" to the CyberTipline that (c) must include any information about the person or Internet address behind the suspect activity and (d) the illegal images themselves. (By the way, "electronic communications service" and "remote computing service" providers already have some reporting requirements under existing law too.)
The definition of which images qualify as illegal is expansive. It includes obvious child pornography, meaning photographs and videos of children being molested. But it also includes photographs of fully clothed minors in overly "lascivious" poses, and certain obscene visual depictions including a "drawing, cartoon, sculpture, or painting." (Yes, that covers the subset of anime called hentai).
